Practice what you Preach

Posted: July 22, 2011 by John D. Hayden in BasketballNBA

We have all heard this idiom several times in our lives, “Practice what you Preach.”  It really means to live the way you tell others to live. You “Practice what you preach”, when you yourself do something the same way you tell others to do it. We hear so many stories about how athletes don’t practice what they preach and athletes who are not great role models. Than we hear stories of men like Mark Jackson, who literally practices what he preaches.
Recently, Mark became the new head coach for the Golden State Warriors. This is his first coaching experience in the NBA but not his first experience practicing what he preaches. Mark spends most of his Sunday mornings not in a gym, but in a church. You can find him setting up chairs,  and arranging flowers with his wife twice a week at the True Love Worship Center International. The NBA lockout might keep him from guiding the Warriors but it won’t  stop him from guiding his congregation. While he doesn’t have any experience as any type of a coach but only as an analyst, his leadership skills he displays as a minister helped him get this position.Mark said, “I  believe this is God calling me to minister and calling me to be a head coach of the Golden State Warriors.” Now there are those out there questioning if a Preacher can be an NBA coach. I truly believe that if we can write sports stories and tie our faith into them, Mark can preach and coach. He will practice what he preaches, on and off the court.
James tells us in James 1:22-25:”But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25But the one who looks into the perfect law,the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”  We need to not just listen to God’s word but put it into practice in our daily walk. In doing so you will be blessed.
We all can learn something from this story, Jesus N Sports go together, just ask Mark Jackson

Ready:
“Rejoice always! Pray constantly. Give thanks in everything, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.”
-1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Set:
As athletes, it’s easy for us to find ourselves in situations that we never played out in our minds. Down by 10 in the fourth quarter against a team that didn’t stand a chance against us. Gripping our knee after tearing an ACL right before our senior season started. Left off the roster of the team we thought we deserved to be on. The list goes on and on. But it's how we handle these “speed bumps” of life that set us apart as Christians.
Recently, I was faced with an unexpected speed bump myself as I found myself working on my second round of rehab from knee surgery. (My knee had decided it didn't want to comply to the demands of my coach and the sport I loved.) But having Christ at the center of my life was key in this situation.
Now, if you’re anything like I am, you thrive on competition, and the bench is not where you want to be. And, like many athletes, I’ve had to overcome countless injuries during my career. Through these struggles and unexpected “game-changing” moments, the Lord has revealed Himself to me in new ways.
Scripture tells us that when we do something, we should do it for the Lord, not for ourselves. In my time as an athlete, I’ve often found myself trying to get better for me, for my team, or to impress my coach. Until recently, it’s wasn't often that I would go back into the game with the purpose of bringing glory to God, let alone thanking Him for having to sit the bench.
But what I’ve learned is that, in times like these, verses like those in 1 Thessalonians 5 give us great perspective. Regardless of our circumstance, regardless of the outcome, regardless of whether or not we planned those speed bumps, we are supposed to thank the Lord and rejoice. It may be difficult, but because of the hope and love we have in Him, we can trust in His plan, rely on Him and keep praying about all things knowing He is in control.
Go:
1. How do you view the unexpected “speed bumps” of life? How would total faith in God’s perfect plan change that view?
2. Do you thank God in every situation?
3. How would thankfulness change in the way you compete?

Are you a champion?

THE CHAMPION

Our vision, Developing The Champion Within, is based on who Jesus is and who you are, in Christ.  Jesus is The Champion.  The Bible says that Jesus spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it (Colossians 2:15).  The Bible says that Jesus, through death, destroyed the devil that had the power of death (Hebrew 2:14).  When you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior, you become a champion because of Jesus.  However, you have to grow and develop within yourself so you can walk in the victory.  We have taken each letter from the word, Champion, and talk about things that you should be developing within yourself .

CONFIDENCE:
What is confidence?
Full trust; belief in the powers, trustworthiness, or reliability of a person or thing. Faith, reliance, dependence, persuaded, trust, assurance, sureness, belief.
How did Jesus show his confidence?
Jesus was confident because of his Father. He lived according to what his Father told him.  For my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand. - John 10:29
How do you show confidence?
You put your trust in Christ and not in yourself. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. You know that Christ is in you perfecting the things that concern you and always causes you to triumph.
Why is confidence important?
Confidence allows you to stay focused because you have good expectations. Confidence keeps you positive and gives you a “can do” attitude. Confidence is seen by others and helps to promote leadership. Confidence gives you assurance that you will succeed and accomplish.
There is good and bad confidence. Good confidence is when you put your trust in God and his ability.  Good confidence helps you to be certain about things because your faith is in God.  Bad confidence is when you put your trust in yourself and your ability only.

HUMILITY:
What is humility?
Modest opinion or estimate of one's own importance, rank, etc. A disposition to be humble; a lack of false pride.  Lowliness, meekness, submissiveness.  Humility is a result of good confidence (The confidence you have in Christ) because you realize that you can not put confidence in yourself. Therefore, you put your confidence in Christ and this helps to be submissive.
How did Jesus show his humility?
Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. - Phil. 2:7-8
How do you show your humility?
Realizing I am nothing without Christ, and that he is my sufficiency, he is my ability. I am what I am by his grace. Serve others. Listen and show submission. Not having to always be right and have the last word. Be teachable and realize I do not know it all.
Why is humility important?
Humility helps to stay out of pride. It makes you more easy to get along with others. It allows you to listen, hear, and learn from others. It helps you to not to think to highly of yourself.  It helps keep you sober.  It promotes teamwork.  It helps others receive from you.  It is a characteristic of a good leader.

AUTHORITY:
What is authority?
The power to determine, adjudicate, or otherwise settle issues or disputes; jurisdiction; the right to control, command, or determine. A power or right delegated or given.  Rule, power, sway, control, right.
How did Jesus show his authority?
Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...." Then he said to the paralytic, "Get up, take your mat and go home." And the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men.? Matthew 9:4-8
How do you express your authority?
Before you can express your authority, you have to understand how and why you have been given the authority. As a parent, I have authority over my children and that authority is given to me from God so that I can be responsible for the training, protection, and well-being of my children.
Why is authority important?
Authority is important because it establishes the chain of command. Authority gives order and set the boundaries for who has power and rule. Authority helps to determine responsibility. When you have been given authority, then you have a responsibility to use the authority for the reason that it was given.

MANNERS:
What are manners?
A person's outward bearing; way of speaking to and treating others: She has a charming manner. Ways of behaving with reference to polite standards; social comportment.  Demeanor, respect, polite, courteous, gracious
How did Jesus show his manners?
Jesus showed his manners by understanding and demonstrating the importance of paying his taxes. He asked, “Whose picture and title are stamped on it?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. “Well, then,” he said, “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.” His reply amazed them, and they went away. - Matthew 22:20-22
How do you show your manners?
You can show manners by speaking to people with respect and kindness.
Why is it important to have manners?

How did Jesus pray?
Jesus prayed to the Father. He prayed alone. He prayed in faith. Jesus prayed unselfishly. Jesus prayed about the Father’s will. Jesus prayed in thanksgiving and obedience to the Father. I have revealed you to the ones you gave me from this world. They were always yours. You gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything I have is a gift from you, for I have passed on to them the message you gave me. They accepted it and know that I came from you, and they believe you sent me. - John 17:6-8
How do you pray?
Pray in faith and thanksgiving to God the Father, in the name of Jesus Christ. Pray about what you desire to come to pass.
Why is it important to pray?
Prayer is important because it is how we communicate with God.

What is image?
Form; appearance; semblance.  A mental representation; idea; conception.  To picture or represent in the mind; imagine; conceive.  To reflect the likeness of; mirror.  The general or public perception of a company, public figure, etc., esp. as achieved by careful calculation aimed at creating widespread goodwill.
What was Jesus' image of himself?
Jesus saw himself as the son of God.  It did not matter how others saw him.  What mattered was the way he saw himself.  He asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?  And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.  He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?  And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.  And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.  - Matthew 16:13-17
What is your image of yourself?
You were created in the image of God.  You should see yourself as being someone that God loves and cares about.
Why is image important?
Image is important because it helps you see yourself and think about yourself correctly.  The Bible says that as a man thinks so is he.  Your image effects what believe you can or can not do in life.  Your image influences the way you dress and talk.  Your image effects the things you expect in life.  Your image affects the way other treat you.
OBEDIENCE:
What is obedience?
To comply with or follow the commands, restrictions, wishes, or instructions of: To carry out or fulfill the command, order, or instruction of.  Compliant, docile, tractable, yielding, deferential, respectful.
How did Jesus demonstrate obedience?
Jesus was obedient to the will of his Father. He did not want to suffer all the pain, however he submitted his will and did what his Father sent him to do. He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood. - Luke 22:41-44
How do you show obedience?
When you listen and follow instructions, then you are showing obedience. Listening to our parents, following the rules of our teachers, and being compliant to the law are examples of how we show our obedience.

Obedience is important because it allows people to follow rules and instructions. Listening and doing to will of others can keep you out of trouble and prevent a lot of problems in life. Obedience is important for leadership because it helps to establish order.

How did Jesus show he was a nurturer?
Jesus demonstrated that he cared and nurtured people when he feed the people. “Bring them here to me," he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. - Matthew 14:18-21
How do you show that you are a nurturer?
When you support people and offer to help people, then you become a nurturer. You want to live to strengthen and protect people.
Why is it important to be a nurturer?
At times, everyone needs a nurturer to support them and offer protection. When we nurture people, we offer needed help that can get them through tough times. Being a nurturer gives you compassion for people and keeps you sensitive to people’s needs. It helps you to consider other people's needs, and keeps you from focusing only on yourself.
