We have all heard this idiom several times in our lives, “Practice what you Preach.” It really means to live the way you tell others to live. You “Practice what you preach”, when you yourself do something the same way you tell others to do it. We hear so many stories about how athletes don’t practice what they preach and athletes who are not great role models. Than we hear stories of men like Mark Jackson, who literally practices what he preaches.Recently, Mark became the new head coach for the Golden State Warriors. This is his first coaching experience in the NBA but not his first experience practicing what he preaches. Mark spends most of his Sunday mornings not in a gym, but in a church. You can find him setting up chairs, and arranging flowers with his wife twice a week at the True Love Worship Center International. The NBA lockout might keep him from guiding the Warriors but it won’t stop him from guiding his congregation. While he doesn’t have any experience as any type of a coach but only as an analyst, his leadership skills he displays as a minister helped him get this position.Mark said, “I believe this is God calling me to minister and calling me to be a head coach of the Golden State Warriors.” Now there are those out there questioning if a Preacher can be an NBA coach. I truly believe that if we can write sports stories and tie our faith into them, Mark can preach and coach. He will practice what he preaches, on and off the court.
James tells us in James 1:22-25:”But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25But the one who looks into the perfect law,the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” We need to not just listen to God’s word but put it into practice in our daily walk. In doing so you will be blessed.
